Wild and Scenic The Wekiva River lived up to it's "Wild and Scenic" status. We glided just a few feet from a six foot gator with 6 or 7 babies on her back. In the pristine quiet you could here the squeaky sound her children made as they rambled over her scales. You must stay alert to see the wildlife. In the pictures below you can see how difficult it is to spot some of these creatures. Wekiwa - Wekiva? The Creek Indian word for the spring is Wekiwa, while Wekiva means "flowing water".

In the photo above, the alligator is motionless. Below you can see the same picture, magnified.

In this side shot, look carefully and notice the babies on her back.

Below we were photographing the Little Blue Heron and didn't notice the turtle until we reviewed the pictures.

In the silence we heard the soft paddle strokes long before we saw this canoe.
