The Gatun lake is man-made and the islands are actually the tops of
hills and mountains, with a large collection of wildlife. |

| The lock system raises ships about 40 feet above sea level for the
passage across Panama. ALL the water in the lock system is fresh water from Gatun Lake. The
lake was created to avoid having to dig the canal down to, and below sea level. There are 3
locks at Gatun. |
